The film opens with Harold Cooper bathing his young son as his wife Sarah receives news over the phone that their friend, Alex, has committed suicide in their guest house. At the funeral, Harold and Sarah are reunited with their old college friends from the '60s, such as Sam, a successful actor; Meg, an unhappy corporate lawyer who wants a child; Michael, a journalist; Nick, a Vietnam veteran and former radio host who suffers from erectile dysfunction; Karen, a housewife who's unhappy in her marriage to Richard, an outsider; and Chloe, Alex's much younger girlfriend at the time of his suicide.
